Ingredients
  • 1 medium jicama, peeled and cut into thin slices (about 1/8 inch thick)
  • 1 cup cooked chicken breast, shredded
  • 1 cup cucumber, finely diced
  • 1 cup bell peppers (red, yellow, or green), finely diced
  • 1 avocado, sliced
  • 1/2 cup fresh cilantro, chopped
  • 1/4 cup lime juice
  • 1 teaspoon chili powder
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Optional: 1/2 cup Greek yogurt or sour cream for drizzling
Directions
  1. Begin by peeling the jicama with a sharp vegetable peeler. Cut the jicama into thin slices, aiming for a thickness of about 1/8 inch to create flexible wraps. Set them aside in a bowl of cold water to keep them crisp.
  2. In a separate bowl, combine the shredded chicken, cucumber, bell peppers, cilantro, lime juice, chili powder, salt, and pepper. Mix well until all ingredients are evenly distributed.
  3. Remove the jicama slices from the water and pat them dry with a paper towel.
  4. Lay a jicama slice flat on a plate. Spoon a generous amount of the chicken and veggie mixture onto one end of the jicama slice.
  5. Add a couple of slices of avocado on top.
  6. Carefully roll the jicama slice around the filling, tucking it in as you go, much like you would a burrito.
  7. Repeat steps 4 through 6 until all ingredients are used.
  8. Drizzle with Greek yogurt or sour cream if desired, and serve immediately.

Jicama wraps are a creative and healthful twist on traditional wraps, utilizing the crunchy texture of jicama for a refreshing change. Jicama, often overlooked in the culinary world, is a root vegetable native to Mexico that is not only low in calories but also packed with fiber and vitamins. Its subtle sweetness and crispness make it an ideal wrap for savory fillings.

This recipe was inspired by the desire to create a light yet satisfying meal that doesn’t compromise on flavor. The combination of shredded chicken, fresh vegetables, and a zesty lime dressing brings a burst of color and taste to the table. In the spirit of Iron Chef creativity, we introduce a hint of chili powder to the filling, giving it a subtle kick that elevates the dish without overwhelming the natural flavors of the ingredients.

“Incorporating jicama as a wrap instead of traditional tortillas is not just a healthier alternative; it’s a testament to the beauty of innovation in cooking. Fresh, vibrant, and unexpected, these wraps serve as a canvas for whatever fillings you desire.”

Whether you’re hosting a summer gathering or simply want a healthy lunch option, these Jicama Wraps offer a unique and delicious experience. Moreover, they can easily be adapted to suit vegetarian or vegan diets—just swap the chicken for black beans or grilled tofu! The possibilities are endless, making this recipe a staple for those who love experimenting in the kitchen. So, grab your jicama and get rolling!
